Stage 13!

Defending champion Any Hampsten returned to the 1989 Giro d’Italia to face very stiff completion. A very fit Laurent Fignon and 1988 runner-up Eric Breukink headed the long list of Challengers.

For the second year in a row horrible weather would affect the race. Stage 13 (!) was a “survival of the fittest”. Luis Herrera and Laurent Fignon broke away on the finishing climb of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Herrera won the stage one second ahead of Fignon. Race leader Breukink began to crack and lost over a minute to Fignon.

The hard charging Frenchman distanced a bonking Breukink again on stage 14, 131 km from Misurina to Corvara Alta Badia. Fignon gained over 3 minutes and put on his first Maglia Rosa of 1989.

The bad weather continued through the climbing stages. The sixteenth stage was canceled because of snow. The climb of the Gavia Pass, the dramatic weather stage from 1988, would be taken out of this year’s Giro.

Laurent Fignon rolled across the finish line in Firenze to claim his first Giro d’Italia victory.
